Object alignment makes an educated guess as to whether to align the selected objects vertically or horizontally. If all objects in the selection are below the top edge of the leftmost object, but not completely to the right of the right edge of the leftmost object, the objects are aligned vertically. Otherwise, they are aligned horizontally.
