Yes, I have latest Quicktime installed. (First thing I checked)

However, I have managed a temporary workaround. In the folder that I was opening, there were two files that were not .avi files. One of them was untitled.avi , a zero byte file created by a render job that I aborted, and the other was a .sfk file (a temporary file generated to store audio peaks by a video NLE). Deleting both of these files fixed the problem - Jitter works normally.

Note that I was not attempting to open either of these files, and that Jitter/Max/MSP would crash immediately that the dialog came on the screen, before I made a selection.

I suspect the culprit was untitled.avi , the zero byte file. However, I am concerned that there is not better error trapping in Jitter, and that such an external factor could cause a crash.
