This may be totally silly question but when I use shininess parameter in conjunction with jit.gl.model and material_mode 0 (which to my understanding overrides model's material properties) it has no effect, while color, for instance does. I also tried rebuild_geometry suggestion that I read about on the list but that had no effect either. Any ideas?
