Ok,

I noticed the movies I were trying were H.264 MP4s. So I dumped a couple H.264 MOVs into the patch and saw a considerable hike in performance (from 6-15fps now to 75-106fps). Still not a steady framerate by any means... but workable now! 

I wonder, is Photo JPEG still the way to go in Max5?

Max 5 is amazing, great work to everyone who developed it! The video installation I've been working on for months in Max 4.6.3 seems to actually enjoy a performance increase in Max 5, by about 5 fps on my Macbook Pro.
