If are you comfortable with Max and MSP, the Jitter tutorials are actually quite enjoyable. Go slowly, make sure you read the tutorial pdf, and you will love it. It won't take you months. Jitter tutorials are a real pleasure compared to Max tutorials! By the way, what you described seems possible to do just in Max, with [lcd]. Jean-François.
