[maxmsp] a methodical way to update MaxMsp ?

Hello, 

When I update MaxMsp, I always have to transvase my personal externals (and help and  so on ...) in the new Max folder. ok .
But maybe it's existing a more elegant way to update, eg. placing the externals (and the special patches like clips and so on...) in a another place? 
Sorry if the question is stupid, but I did not found anything related in the archives
