I work sometimes with a digi002R (mostly with an RMe400).
I did not have the problem you noticed, also on Macbookpro;
Is your 002 firmware updated ?
Try like Tommy sais also to install the last version of ProTools (7.3)?but 7.1.1 should work...

and - I'm not sure at all but ... - see also your setting in the Max dsp status,
try to change the buffer values, it helps sometimes with the digi002
trash also the Protools prefs ?
anyway it should work !
