[maxmsp] compare and output

Ok I know this is a real easy one but my brain hurts. I need to output only if there is change in a stream of numbers. Not sure how clear that is...I've tried using 
if $f1 != $f2 then set $f1 
but thats not working, and I've been through the tutorials and as I've said my brain hurts.
Any help would be fantastic
