[maxmsp] newb question: list

I've had problems with understanding how to output a list.
For instance in my latest patch I have an rslider.  Going into the left
inlet of the rslider is a message "listmode 1" which should mean both left
and right
values are output through the left outlet of the rslider. Yet I'm not sure
how I can see the values.  If I wire 2 number boxes to the left outlet, all
I get is the left
value in the 1st number box.  I thought a blank message object would allow
for the output but that must be wrong.
So, the question is how can I see both output values using listmode 1, in
the patcher, not via print.
