That should work in Windows as well, but you have to point it to a 
document which is supposed to open the application like myletter.doc 
will open OpenOffice if you assigned the .doc extension to OpenOffice 
(If you didn't, it would probably open this other closed source moloch, 
who's name I can't remember... ;-)
