Reading your symptoms, I'm thinking, well, when Max refuses to make a connection it's normally because the patch-time type-checking says the recipient won't understand the message the sender is transmitting. I always assumed that was one of the reasons for specifying message types in the API for creating inlets and outlets. So much is not news, but it may be a sign that Max is loading the wrong external file for one of your objects. I had this happen with scale object years ago, from the wild west days when there was no standard scale object but about 15 different 3PO implementations. One reason I gave scampi and scampf oddball names was to avoid external name ambiguity. I realize you can't save a patch with the connection that crashes Max, but can you localize to particular externals? And maybe Spotlight your search path to be sure there aren't any duplicates. You can edit the text file, that you can't do with preset. I think there are still a number of Max users around who didn't do the pattr tutorials, but learnt coll a long time ago. That's why it's still the easiest way for them. But for a new user, I think pattr is as easy as dealing with coll. Actually, it is even easier if what you want to do is presets. Programming the multi-dimensional interpolation between 3 presets or more yourself would be a pain with colls, and not easy to maintain. Yes, think about it. You want a crossfade between presets. You want a situation "25 % of preset A, 30 % of preset B, 45 % of preset C". How do you do that with colls? Time, energy, and more. With pattr, it's built in. One thing to think about is: with an overlap of 4, the "sampling rate" inside the pfft~ is twice the sampling rate outside (OK, this is not a sampling rate, let's say the rate of information on signal MSP connections), so what happens to the data when you use send~/receive~? I thought actually about these problem of "virtual doubling" of the frequency. And I also tried with the [fftout~ nofft] but it is not working as I expected... My idea is to have the pfft~?doing the windowing and overlaping but be able to dispatch the fftbins in several places. So that I have only 2 or 4 ffts and iffts (in pfft~ patches) to save my CPU load. And do whatever I want with the bins exactly as "time-domain-audio". But there are three problems doing that with [fftout~ nofft] and [fftin~ nofft] pairs. The first one is that you can't do that with more than 2 overlapping windows and you also can't specify some initial delays or "fullscale" ffts. The second is that the [fftout~?nofft] is still doing the adding before outputting as if there was an effective overlap. And finally, I couldn't find a way to synchronise two pfft~ so I am sure that the bin-index for resynthesis is correct. But maybe I am looking for something that is not really possible with pfft~ because it has not been conceived for that... I just wanted to avoid the manual windowing and overlapping. He will take a step to the left or to the right at random (not knowing whence he has come nor to where he wishes to go). After the first step, his next step is chosen at random, either to the left or right. And so on. In the mathematical model the drunk never sobers up (whereas in real life he will be found at dawn by the police who will either take him home or put him in the clink). And interesting phenomenon of the model is that the drunk keeps on returning to his starting place. The model is a form of Brownian notion (check that out on wikipedia for more gory details). What to use it for? I don't because there's something called Litter Power that I generally use. Drunk is a kind of semi-controlled randomness, technically a species of 1/f^2 noise, and it sounds different from white randomness or pink randomness and other random models. Litter Power has some examples that demonstrate the difference in sound of different "colored" random number sources (white, pink, brown, black). You might want to give them a listen. URL below. I've built a performance patch for a dance company that includes a nice little preset builder for their tech guy to use. I used a series of [pattr]'s connected to UI objects using the middle (bindto) outlet. Presets are stored and loaded using [pattrstorage]. Everything works beautifully on my machine, but on the company's computer (which only has runtime) no presets are stored. Initially I thought that it was due to some difference in our machines, but it appears that the problem lies with Runtime. Both machines have 4.6.3 and _neither_ is able to store presets using Runtime. Has anyone encountered this before? Is it a known issue? They've exhausted their demo and are not able to upgrade to a full version of Max (nor should they need to simply to run one patch). Also i have worked through the tutorials, of MAX/MSP. Which i do think are really good. I would in all honesty LOVE to go to one of the workshops that happen around the World, and one day i will. But just not now. The only reason i can not, is for one. I live in Dubai U.A.E. I moved over from the UK, over a year ago, and am now working at a Radio & TV Audio Production Company, as a Sound Engineer. And 2, unlike the rest of the World that has Workshops and the like. Dubai is deprived of any such workshops or class or even knowledge of MAX/MSP. I actually do think i am the only person here in Dubai, that knows even about MAX/MSP. Which is nice to know, but yet and Damn Curse. So, anyhow, i will get to the point at hand. Does ANYONE, know of ANY online courses, training and know how about MAX/MSP. I think the tutorials that come with it are good, but i really need more. So if there is any online training or classes that someone may know of, please do share the information. Or even any really good up-to-date books. I am willing to pay, but i am not willing to pay for a Plane Ticket, then for a Workshop that is happening in Germany, and then have to pay for a Hotel, It has to be ONLINE, so I can then download classes. I will do a class when i have a hell more money. It would be great if you have some good information Lewis From spondoo at hotmail.com Wed Apr 2 04:01:50 2008 From: spondoo at hotmail.com (Adam) Date: Wed Apr 2 04:01:58 2008 Subject: [maxmsp] Alternating between images with select Message-ID: <213b9.47f3598d@www.cycling74.com> In the patch below, I have one image being displayed when the patch is loaded, but when a bang is sent from the receive object, a second image takes its place for a couple of milliseconds and then disappears. E.g. the image is white when the patch is loaded and each time a bang is received the picture flashes red and then returns back to white. However, occasionally if an odd number off bangs are received, the image gets stuck on red and therefore works in the reverse order, flashing white when a bang is received. Is there a way to ensure that the image will only ever flash red without getting stuck? #P window setfont "Sans Serif" 9.; #P window linecount 1; #P newex 399 177 49 196617 delay 90; #P button 343 101 15 0; #P toggle 371 199 15 0; #P newex 329 28 30 196617 r hit; #P message 338 355 56 196617 read 2.jpg; #P message 348 313 56 196617 read 1.jpg; #P newex 377 280 41 196617 sel 0 1; #P connect 3 0 5 0; #P connect 5 0 4 0; #P connect 5 0 6 0; #P connect 4 0 0 0; #P connect 6 0 4 0; #P fasten 0 1 1 0 397 264 353 264; #P fasten 0 0 2 0 382 269 343 269; #P window clipboard copycount 7; From generalh at noos.fr Wed Apr 2 04:12:09 2008 From: generalh at noos.fr (Hubert PICHOT) Date: Wed Apr 2 04:12:19 2008 Subject: [maxmsp] Online Training & Tutorials In-Reply-To: <213b8.47f35234@www.cycling74.com> References: <213b8.47f35234@www.cycling74.com> Message-ID: on cycling74 web site there is enough to learn alone without having a teacher and well if you work on those tutorials http://www.cycling74.com/twiki/bin/view/ResourceGuide/TutorialResources and if you have questions people on list will answer there is also cnmat pages, a lot to work on... cheers hubert Hubert PICHOT General H Production 73, rue de la Ziegelau 67100 STRASBOURG generalh@generalh.org From wugmump at mac.com Wed Apr 2 04:18:01 2008 From: wugmump at mac.com (joshua goldberg) Date: Wed Apr 2 04:18:14 2008 Subject: [maxmsp] Re: Swapping #s In A List In-Reply-To: <2137a.47f2bf4d@www.cycling74.com> References: <2137a.47f2bf4d@www.cycling74.com> Message-ID: <4C4CB935-37F2-43F2-9615-1830C2DDFD30@mac.com> copy all of those lines and paste them into your max patch. Message-ID: <213ce.47f379d7@www.cycling74.com> Hello, I was two hours dealing with the following patch -also in trace mode- and I didn't catch my error. Am I forgetting something or could it be that there is a bug in the counter object or some of the other objects I use in the patch. The patch is a part of a bigger one that should perform an automatic counting action for dumping matrixes. Only thing that works pretty fine (when he manage connect and don't disconnect by itself) is the acceleration and position tracker) searching the list, I can read ones advising for the use of OSCulator and others reporting aka.remote unreleased bugs on ppc, but my problem seems realy enormous. any confirmation, or other idea ?
