Working with radiaL

I loaded a loop and it doesn't sound the same as the original file. What's going on?

When radiaL loads a loop, it calculates its playback speed based on the master tempo, so that all the loops stay in sync with each other. This means that the pitch of a loop may be higher or lower when you load it. Once you've loaded your loop, you can use radiaL's pitch/time grid to retune it, and further transpose the tuned loop in the Channel inspector. Of course, any settings you save will include loop tuning information.

Does radiaL work with WAV files? What about MP3?

radiaL can import any file format that QuickTime can read. Once loaded, they all work the same. Note that MP3 files are decompressed on load, so they take the same amount of memory as normal audio.

How long can my loops be?

This is a function of the amount of memory you have allocated to the radiaL application and the number of loop channels you're working with. radiaL uses 32-bit floating point math internally, so most files will take up about twice as much space in memory as they do on disk. The memory meter helps you monitor the amount of memory available.

How many loop channels and effects and outputs can I have?

When you launch radiaL for the first time, it is configured to use four loop channels, two effects sends, and two outputs. Use the Configure window in radiaL to add whatever you need. The only practical limitation is what fits on your screen. As an example, a G4 PowerBook can fit about 11 loop channels and 7 effects on its 15" display. Many users are surprised to discover that they use fewer loop channels and effects than they initially think they'll require.

Can I move the radiaL windows around?

Yes. Window positions are saved along with the rest of your settings.

Can use radiaL with live input instead of loops?

The initial version of radiaL does not support live input. We are working to include this ability in a future version.
