UpMix General Questions

When are the UpMix plug-ins most useful?

The UpMix plug-ins are intended for use in reprocessing and remixing mono and stereo sources to 5.1 surround sound.

I'm not a surround engineer. Can I still use them?

Anyone with the appropriate setup and host can use UpMix. They can aid in the creation of a deep, immersive mix. The best results, however, will be from those with a good knowledge of surround mixing.

Does Cycling '74 make other surround products?

Yes, we also created Octirama, a dynamics plug-in for working in 5.1 with proprietary DSP technology that preserves the surround image.

How can I learn more about surround?

One of the best resources for surround information is the FAQ created and maintained by Bobby Owsinski of Surround Associates.

Is a proper fold down (downmix) from 5.1 to Stereo still that important?

Unfortunately, for most anything sync'd to picture it is becoming increasingly rare to provide separate stereo and surround versions. Film, DVD, even most Broadcast Television, are depending more and more on the Lt/Rt (Left total/Right total downmix of 5.1 discreet) for the stereo version. The HD broadcast spec requires it.

For a good explanation from the Producers and Engineers wing of the Recording Academy, see this column from MIX magazine.
