I had a simple idea and made a 100% working patch, but I feel like it's at least 10 times as complex as it would need to be. I made it this complex in order to avoid stack overflows, but doubt it's done well.

The patch allows you to set an interval (for example 1.5) and you will see 16 numboxes change into: 1.5 3 4.5 6 7.5 9 10.5 12 13.5 15 16.5 18 19.5 21 22.5 24.

When tuning the third numbox from 4.5 into 4.8 everything turns to

1.6 3.2 4.8 6.4 8 9.6 11.2 12.8 14.4 16 17.6 19.2 20.8 22.4 24 25.6

So each time 16 multiplications of the set interval are made, or the interval is calculated from one of the 16 numboxes and applied to the other 15 numboxes. I ran easily into stack overflows.

My current solution is a canapus analog to dv converter with adapter cables which is working fine. But sadly dropped the firewire support in macOS Tahoe after 26 years ;-)

Hi everyone, I am building a sound installation with load cells laid out in a 6x6 matrix, 60cm apart. On top of the load cells are wooden boards. I send my raw sensor data from Arduino to Max and then calculate centroid of mass, mass velocity, speed (scalar & vector), and a few other things.

The challenge I'm currently stuck with is how to implement a trigger system for events/bangs. So far I've tried combinations of peak detection (with and without blocking timers) and velocity thresholds (with hysteresis). When I use velocity or acceleration, it reacts well but is often too sensitive and picks up steps or unintentional movements. When I use peak detection, there's a small delay.

A basic problem is that people continuously stand or move on the surface, which you don't have with touchpads or XY pads—usually the user removes their finger and there are no movements that aren't trigger movements in some way.

For those with more experience in designing interactive systems than me: what are possible ways of tackling this problem? Either it's delayed, not sensitive enough, or it gets too sensitive and triggers at unpredictable points for the user.

Can anybody help? Any pointers in the right direction are much appreciated.

I know it gets brought up every once in a while, but I thought I'd post again to see what the interest was out there for getting Max working in Linux.

I jump between Mac, Winows, and Linux (Ubunutu) fairly regularly as no single OS can do everything I need under one roof. I teach at a university in physics and recording arts where I use Max, Wavelab, Nuendo, and Live extensively for demonstrations and PowerPoint/Keynote for presenting. I also run a recording/mastering/post studio where I again use Nuendo & Wavelab. But I also run an acoustic R&D company where I use Solidworks, QCAD, and a few other drawing/modeling tools. And lastly I head up an interdisciplinary research collective that mostly uses Max, but also vvvv, Processing, TouchDesigner, Quartz Composer, etc.

But I'm finding that I prefer Linux above Windows and Mac more and more for the sheer speed, customization, and adaptability even though it's by far the least supported for applications which really bums me out. While I'm a big supporter of open source I'm also happy to pay for good commercial software like Max. i just wish Max, and a few others, would run on Linux.

Max is one of the biggest hangups for me to not spend almost all of my time in Linux. PD is a great program, no doubt, but I rely on a lot of the awesome and amazing externals out there and the great Max community (along with a number of other reasons). Even getting Max to run under Wine would be OK, though native support would be much more preferable. But the iLok stuff only works on Mac/Win, even though I use the software key/internet activation.

So I'm interested if there's any other folks out there in the same boat as myself. I know Linux support is a low priority for most commercial companies that are trying squash bugs and be innovative, but I feel like Ubuntu and other flavors are on the rise and have some very cool potential in the multimedia realm (but that could also be just because I've been getting more into it personally). If there's enough of us requesting maybe we could see a Linux release in the future! Anyone else interested in seeing this happen?

Like Pro Tools or Logic Pro X? There are several M4L devices that I would love to incorporate in to my work flow but I find Ableton itself to be a less than stellar work environment after decades in PT/Logic.

It seems like it would theoretically possible to just run Max in the background and set up some MIDI I/O between the two. Am I crazy?

Is it possible to adapt M4L devices to be used on other DAW platforms? 

I'm trying to implement a device that I can map the outputs of my sensel morph in M4L and came across a problem that I'm sure has been debated here but I just cannot find it. The Sensel external works when I have the Max window open but as soon as I only run it in Ableton, it won't pick up any data.

in the max world, i have a buffer with the name #1 so the name of the buffer changes to whatever the name of the abstraction is. (‘patch’ loop changes the buffer’s name to loop if i open that specific abstraction)

in gen, i have three operators with the names buffer #1, dim #1 and peek #1. its giving me an error in the console saying ` dim/peek • invalid constant ‘#1’, using 0 instead’

I'm trying to build-up more complex logic, but the point at which I'm stuck is I want to create a single list of float values from a series of inputs.. e.g., in this simple case, each time the float value is set (via tab key out of it) the list (bottom message box) is currently appending a 0, instead of the input value.  what am I doing wrong?
